What kind of Jamaican would I be if I never stopped to acknowledge the birthday of one of our greatest icons — the LEGEND himself, Mr. Robert ‘Nesta’ Marley?!!
Today marks the day this great man was born. Who knew he would turn out to be one of those persons who helped put his country on the world map? Who knew he could emerge from the little community of Trench Town in the little island of Jamaica to be celebrated worldwide for his timeless lyrics? He’s truly the definition of “Likkle but Tallawah”. His work is living proof that “a journey of a thousand miles [really] begins with a single step”. All it took was him getting up and using his voice — his talent — and the rest was history.
So, if he could do this, what’s wrong with the rest of us? It saddens me to see the mentality of my Jamaican people sometimes. We have sunken ourselves so deep into our problems that sometimes we fail to realize just how great we truly are and just how great we can become. Days like today help to remind me that there is so much more we can do. We too are all just legends waiting to embrace our true form and to break out of our cocoons and become the butterflies we truly are meant to be.
Look at us… We are — Marcus Garvey, Louise Bennett-Coverly, Claude McKay, Bob Marley, Tessanne Chin, Jimmy Cliff, Arthur Wint, Herb McKenley, Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Veronica Campbell, Asafa Powell, Merlene Ottey and SO MANY OTHERS!! So why aren’t we living up to our true potential? Come on Jamaica…. Time for us to “move forward in dis generation”.
Let’s all make a bold step to make a positive difference in some way, great or small, in our communities and by extension our country.
We are Jamaica.
Happy Birthday Bob Marley!
